Weekends

Scout centers and camp sites finally reopened their gates in August. Initially they were allowed family camping only. The change to allow scouts to camp coincided with our plan to have a county fun day in Larch Hill. Camping was permitted with family members sharing or in individual tents. We decided to put our hammock skills to the test. in Larch Hill the night before the fun day.

Firhouse scouts had the same idea. However we were the only groups that turned up.

We spent the evening setting up camp in the woods and hanging out by the fire swapping lock down stories. The next day the scouts from both groups had the opportunity to compare camps and ideas to run scouting with the Covid restrictions. We finished the day with a barbecue.

We then planned a bigger expedition. Firstly we needed to invest in more hammocks and some better tarps. Destination for the camp was to be Castle Saunderson. However just as our booking was made Dublin moved from stage 2 to stage 3 and new restrictions came in to effect. Our booking was switched to Larch hill.

We arrived at 7:30, after checking in we set up two Icelandics to store gear and our hammocks.

On Saturday morning we were woke up for breakfast at 7:00. The 2 Patrols headed off to Bray for kayaking at 9:00. The remaining patrols worked to improve the camp set up until the bus returned. There was an east wind causing quite a rough sea for first group, so the instructors decided to bring them up the estuary. When the second group arrived they had to bring the kayaks to the river as the harbor was too rough.

After the guys got back and showered we had lunch .

followed by the Climbing Tower and Archery.

The evening was spent doing dinner and relaxing. We got up late on Sunday morning, had a relaxing breakfast and then packed up. When we were ready to leave we had a quick closing ceremony at which the scouts were awarded their Chief Scout award earned in their last year of Cubs.
