Rain gear
Rain gear is really the best way of making sure your cub has a great time on activities.
All cubs need to have the following: a proper raincoat that is fully waterproof, proper rain over-trousers (not ski trousers), and hiking boots. If they don't have them already, they can get find these in shops like Decathlon, Mountain Warehouse, and Regatta and keep your eye out for Lidl and Aldi sales too.
Uniform
Monday night cubs need to wear hiking boots or dark shoes, navy or black trousers / tracksuit pants, the cub jumper and their 37th troop necker with a woggle.
As we know these can be costly, we'd encourage you to use second hand cub jumpers and for parents of former cubs to donate their old jumpers to us when they finish.
We currently have a few secondhand 9/10 year old sized jumpers which are available for free to parents. Just drop Oran a DM. First come first served.
Badges
There's a chart at the bottom of this post of a cub jumper with all the badges. Some of these badges will be earned by cubs and given by leaders (Special interest badges, Adventure skills badges, Chief Scout Award, pack badge with drawing of an animal). Others will be given to the cubs by the scouters for special roles in the group (Sixer and seconder). Some aren't used by this group (Adventure quest badges, Boat man badges).
The badges that your cub needs to have stitched on his uniform (ideally stitched by the cub themselves) by the date of their investiture are the following:
- 'Scouting Ireland' (on the right chest from the cub's pov)
- 'Scout County' i.e. Mountpelier County (on the left sleeve)
- 'Cub Scout' (on the left sleeve)
Any of the 9 possible adventure skills badges earned by Beavers or in previous year in cubs or beavers ( on the right sleeve below i.e. camping, emergencies, etc.)
- 'Scout Group' i.e. 37th Scout Troop on left sleeve
- Pack badge with drawing of an animal (not featured in image below, but goes on the top on the right arm above the special interest badges)
So what do you need to buy? #1-3
What will you move from their beaver jumpers to new cub jumpers? #4
And what will the leaders provide? #5 -6.
Where do you get all this?
All cub jumpers and badges can be bought online at https://thescoutshop.ie/ or purchased in their shop in Bray. (Note: You can try on the cub uniform and find your size in the Outdoor Adventure Store on Liffey Street in Dublin, but you can only purchase from the Bray shop or online.)
We'd recommend you phone in advance if going to the shop as items can sometimes be out of stock.
Hope that all makes sense. Please ask leaders if you have any questions
