As part of the recent Beaver's backwoods adventure in Larch Hill, many of our Beavers were awarded Backwoods Adventure Skills Badges. Our next programme cycle, or series of meetings will be around the theme of Festivals and the Beavers will have an opportunity to earn a Special Interest Badge (SIB).
There are five themed SIBs that a Beaver can earn. They are designed to allow a Beaver earn a badge by completing a project related to anyting they have a personal interest in. The principle of ‘doing one’s best’ is the key feature of the badges.
Beavers should identify an activity or subject of interest and see which badge it would fit under:
Skills: This allows for individuals to develop their personal skills base. – e.g. drama, cooking, painting, martial arts, web site design, musical instrument, foreign language etc.
Adventure: This should be an adventure journey that includes something completely new i.e. a new location, new method of travel, etc
Physical: Any physical pursuit or activity – e.g. athletics, sports team, archery.
Community Involvement : Being involved in your community e.g volunteering, participation, a community service project, tidy towns etc.
Environment: This can be any project that improves the environment in any way e.g. recycling, leave no trace, community clean up, gardening, nature project, learning about pollution.
Once a Beaver has an idea, they will sit down with one of their scouters and agree a plan for how they will earn their badge. Beaver and Scouter will then fill out the Badge Design form:
At Beaver level, the projects don't need to be complex, but they should follow the general rules:
Challenge the Beaver to learn new skills or develop existing skills
Help to increase a Beavers knowledge of their Special Interest
Contain a practical element that will help others e.g. educating other Beavers in the colony through a presentation or demonstration
The badges require buy-in from parents as the work is done outside of normal Colony meetings. We'd appreciate if parents could have a chat with your Beavers about what they might like to do to earn a badge. It is crucial that it is both challenging and, most importantly, fun!
