Beaver Backwoods Adventure

For the last few weeks our 7.30 Beavers have been learning how to be Explorers. They've learned about using knives, creating a survival kit, cooked food on a fire and learned about the gear they need for the outdoors.

On Sunday 10th February, they will get the chance to use all of the skills and knowledge they have learned to become real-life explorers! Those that have completed all the elements required for their backwoods badges will be awarded their badges on the day.

The Backwoods Adventure is open to all Beavers.

Beaver Scouts will be outdoors for the duration so it is essential they have proper gear to stay warm and dry. The day will include a short hike, followed by backwoods cooking and shelter building.

Survival Kit (Mandatory to earn Backwoods badge):

For their backwoods badges the Beavers need to put together a small survival Kit with around ten items. The Beavers should have loads of ideas of what to include from their work in the evening meetings.

The kit should be in a small bag, box or tin. Some ideas for things to include:

  • Needle

  • Thread

  • Small length of rope or twine

  • Duct tape

  • Plasters

  • Disinfectant wipes

  • Scissors/pocket knife

  • Waterproof matches (normal matches with heads dipped in candle wax)

  • Tinder material (e.g. cotton wool)

  • Flint for fire starting

  • Water purification tablets

  • Fishing line

  • Fishing hook

  • Small torch

  • Mirror

  • Magnifying glass

  • Compass

  • Map

  • Foil blanket

  • Bivvy bag

  • Candle

  • Safety pins

  • Tweezers

  • Whistle

  • Chocolate

The Beavers should understand why they have included the various items in the kit. There will be a kit inspection on the day.
